Chinese Medical Team Provides Free Health Services to Roma Community

Chinese medical doctors give free health services to Roma community

In a landmark humanitarian effort, a team of Chinese medical doctors provided free medical services to members of the Roma community and staff at the National University of Lesotho (NUL). The outreach, held at the university’s Roma Campus, was organised by the Confucius Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (popularly known as the Confucius Institute) in collaboration with local authorities on 16th May, 2025.

The initiative – marking the first of its kind since the establishment of the Confucius Institute at NUL – offered complimentary health screenings and diagnostic services as part of efforts to strengthen community engagement and international cooperation. The event also formed part of the university’s 80th Anniversary celebrations, which emphasize social responsibility and public outreach.

In addition to medical consultations, the Chinese medical team distributed food parcels to under-privileged households in the Roma area. Recipients were identified with the assistance of local area chiefs and community counsellors, ensuring that aid reached those most in need.

Beneficiaries of the program expressed deep appreciation for the outreach, citing the value of access to free healthcare and essential support.

“I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, something I didn’t even know I had,” said Mrs. ’Masechaba Thaanyane, a local resident who attended the clinic. “I am truly grateful to the doctors for helping me understand my condition and giving me advice on how to manage it.”

NUL staff members also welcomed the program, commending the Confucius Institute and the Chinese medical team for their compassionate service.

The Co-Director of the Confucius Institute, Dr. Fanxing Meng, said the outreach was designed to reinforce the institute’s role as a bridge between cultures while addressing real community needs.

“This event reflects the spirit of unity, care, and mutual support that defines our collaboration with the National University of Lesotho and the surrounding community,” said Dr Meng.

The initiative is seen as a significant milestone in promoting public health awareness and delivering essential services to communities with limited access to healthcare.
