Director Students Affairs

Ms. Tholoana Ntene

Ms. Tholoana Ntene resumed her duty as Director Student Affairs for the National University of Lesotho on the 1st November 2017.

Ms Ntene is an alumnus of the National University of Lesotho who graduated in 1991 in Diploma in Theology.  In 1994, she graduated in Bachelor of Arts in Psychology of Education at the National University of Lesotho.

She furthered her studies in 2003 with the University of Free State and obtained Honors Degree in Psychology of Education. In 2004, she obtained Post Graduate Diploma in Psychology of Education from the University of Free State.  Her Master’s degree was acquired from the University of Free State in 2005.

She brings a wealth of experience in working with students having been working as a Student Counsellor in the Department of Student Affairs for more than ten years.

Overview of Department of Student Affairs

The Department of Student Affairs (DSA) has been established to create a home away from home climate for students and enabling environment for their effective learning; assisting them in realizing their educational objective; support and enhance their health and wellbeing. The department takes responsibility to support students during their live in the university by enhancing their social, personal and academic growth and development both individually and collectively.

This focuses on providing welfare and care; supporting their mental, emotional, spiritual, physical development and growth; enhancing student discipline; promoting student health and wellness; enhancing their commitment to professional values enshrined in those of NUL. The department offers a wide range of facilities and services under the following units: Student Welfare Unit; Careers and Counselling Unit; Health Centre and Sports, Recreation and Culture Unit. The latter runs twenty three sport codes.

The department has a professional team of Welfare Officers, Counsellors, Nurses and Wardens with experience in their areas of expertise. It is headed by the Director of Student Affairs (DSA) who reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor.

Services of the Department of Student Affairs

The Department offers a number of services in an effort to ensure an enabling environment for students and to indeed be a home away from home as follows:

Counselling Services

Careers and Counselling Unit (CCU) provides assistance to students to deal with ongoing life challenges that are social, academic, psychological or emotional through individual and/or group counselling interventions. The unit has a highly qualified team of Psychologists who are devoted and committed to offer therapeutic interventions to vulnerable students. Cognizant of counselling code of ethics and principle of humanity, the CCU team are entrusted to psychosocially support NUL students thereby assisting them to redefine is rediscover themselves while making informed decisions in the face of both academic and social challenges. 

 Health Services:

The department has a health centre that provides services geared towards preventive and curative treatment as well as health education and counselling. While the service is provided mainly for students and staff it is also extended to the members of the communities in the Roma Health Centre Catchment area. The centre works in close cooperation with St. Joseph’s Hospital (5km away) which serves as its referral hospital.

Welfare Services

The unit provides accommodation, welfare and care for students, conflict management and resolution among students, security and safety of students and their property and emotional support to students during bereavement. It further assists students with personal, social and academic matters. Welfare Officers and Wardens play a pivotal role in developing impact programmes and practices that enhance student successes during their academic and extracurricular activities.

Sports and Recreation:

The department provides recreational services for students to afford them a fuller and active lifestyle that will promote healthy interaction among themselves as well as leadership skills and a sense of loyalty and fair play. The university has sporting facilities supporting all sport codes in which students are involved. Sporting facilities include play grounds, halls and courts. Sport codes include Soccer (male and female), Basketball, Volleyball, Netball, Table-Tennis, Lawn Tennis, ring tennis, Chess, Boxing, Marshall Arts, Softball, Cricket, Dancing, and Athletics. Choral music, Cultural activities are part of the activities in which students are involved.
