The 16th Council of the National University of Lesotho
The Chancellor of the National University of Lesotho (NUL), His Majesty King Letsie III officially inaugurated the 16th NUL Council during a ceremony held at Roma Campus on 1st July, 2026.
The event marked the beginning of a new governance term (three years) for the institution’s highest decision-making body.
During the Council’s inaugural sitting, Dr. Khabele Matlosa was elected the Chairman of the 16th Council of the National University of Lesotho.
The newly constituted Council is built of representatives from the University’s governance structures and key stakeholder groups. Its membership comprises the Chancellor (who is also the President of the Council); the Chairman of Council; four (4) Ex-Officio members, namely: the Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the Superior of the Pius XII College House, and the Administrator of the Pius XII College House.
Other members are appointees of the Head of State, Senate, Congregation, Students’ Union, non-academic staff, and the Alumni Association.
The Council also includes four members with recognized expertise in higher education from outside Lesotho, appointed by the Chancellor on the advice of the Prime Minister after consultation with the Council and the Senate, as well as four members appointed by the Chancellor to represent the broader interests of the community. The Registrar is the Secretary to the Council.
The Council serves as the University’s principal governing body, mandated to advance academic excellence, institutional accountability, and sustainable development. The inauguration of the 16th Council underscores NUL’s continued commitment to strengthening its governance and advancing its mission of delivering quality higher education in support of Lesotho’s national development.
As stipulated in the National University of Lesotho (NUL) Order 19 of 1992, Section 14 (1), the Head of State of Lesotho shall be the Chancellor of the University and in that office shall be Head of the University and President of the Council. The Council is the supreme governing body of the University.
