Responsible for | Undertaking cleaning duties, as set out in the Cleaning Schedule and to ensure the University premises are maintained in a clean and tidy manner at all times on a daily basis. To carry out intensive cleaning of the buildings out of normal term time and other cleaning tasks as directed by the Domestic Bursar. |
Duties and Responsibilities | |
General responsibilities
Cleaning and Hygiene Services Function |
· DAILY CLEANING SCHEDULE:
1. Cleaning of ablution facilities baths, showers and basins in addition to restrooms fixtures and fittings according to the surface type including: o Toilet basins, seats and surrounds o Urinals and tile surrounds o Wash wall area under hand dryers o Clean sinks and tile surrounds o Wash floors o Disinfect all areas 2. Clean floors as follows: o Swept floors in studios and place rubbish in bins o Vacuum/sweep floors in corridors o Vacuum floors in offices o Sweep stairs and stairwells 3. Empty waste bins. 4. Dust and Polish including: o Radiators, pipes, window ledges, door and window frames and all areas that can be reached from floor level o Telephone handsets to be cleaned using disinfectant spray and cloths o Polish desk areas which are clear of work o Dust computers, keyboards and printers 5. Spills: o Mop up spills as quickly as possible o Remove spots and spillages from carpets and upholstery o Use appropriate absorbent materials to clean spills as required o Use of chemicals according to requirements and safety principles 6. Generalized Areas o Cleaning above the floor surfaces inside a building according to the surface type o Cleaning exterior areas according to the surface type o Cleaning small kitchens according to the surface type o Cleaning windows · Floors o Cleaning hard floors according to the surface type o Cleaning resilient floors according to the surface type o Cleaning textile floors according to the surface type o Environmental Awareness o Clean floors using hand held tools and equipment as well as an ability to use vacuums or other floor cleaning and polishing machines |
Events and Conferencing
Planning |
· Assisting the Domestic Bursary with Cleaning and Decoration at major University functions and events such as the Graduation Ceremonies and Meetings of University statutory bodies. Decorations include dressing of tables and arrangement of flowers for special occasions. |
Accommodation and
Housekeeping |
· Assisting the Domestic Bursary, where hospitality services are provided to visiting guest lecturers at the guest houses or alternative accommodation by:
o Ensuring that the facilities are fit for use during their stay o Ensuring the cleaning of buildings during their stay o Providing laundry services as need arises |
General responsibilities
Customer Service Health and Safety Compliance |
· Delivering good customer service to students, and staff.
· Compliance with health and safety guidelines for cleaning and hygiene services |
The above is not an exhaustive list of duties. The post-holder may be asked to take on different tasks as required and all employees are expected to work collaboratively to support the overall work of the University. |
Criteria | Essential | Desirable |
Education, Training and Qualifications | · LGCSE/ IGCSE/COSC/GCE or equivalent | · Certificate in hygiene and cleaning or related course |
Experience | · Experience minimum 6 years as a cleaner
· Can demonstrate experience of: o working in role involving cleaning, hygiene cleaning service, janitorial and or hospitality/catering services |
· Experience in a similarly sized institution, agency or enterprise would be an added advantage |
Skills | · Experience of cleaning work
· Ability to undertake duties with a flexible approach and minimal supervision and willing to work as part of a team · Ability to plan and organize your own work on a daily basis · Ability to perform laundry services · Ability to clean and decorate venues for special event (i.e. Management Meetings, Council Meetings, Memorial Services, Graduations etc.)

· Knowledge of the different forms of cleaning, including the use of machines |
Personal Attributes and Interpersonal skills | · Must be able to work even after normal working hours when need arise;
· Must be able to speak fluently both English and Sesotho as the main mode of communication; · Must be self-driven and independent person; · Must be able to work under minimal supervision and must possess a high degree of confidentiality; · Must be able to work under pressure; · Must be a person of sober habits. · A flexible approach to work, adapting to change at short notice. · Flexibility and a willingness to work unsociable hours when required. · Must have a relatively high fitness level and must be able to work standing for long uninterrupted periods of time. · Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills. Must be courteous · Sound time management and organizational skills. · A positive attitude and pride in maintaining a clean environment · Trustworthy, punctual, and reliable |
Employment Contract:
Permanent and Pensionable.
