The National University of Lesotho (NUL) proudly announces the establishment of the Confucius Institute of Chinese Culture, Language, and Agricultural Sciences and Technology at NUL. The Confucius Institute is a non-profit-making educational institute jointly established by Chinese and overseas partner institutions based on mutual respect, friendly consultation, equality and mutual benefit principles. This landmark initiative was formally approved by the University Council on 19 December 2024, marking a significant step towards fostering academic collaboration, cultural exchange, and agricultural innovation.
Background
The vision to establish a Confucius Institute at NUL dates back to 2017/2018, intending to integrate Chinese cultural studies, language education, and agricultural sciences into the university’s academic landscape. This initiative was realised through a strategic partnership between NUL and two esteemed Chinese institutions: Jilin Agricultural University (JLAU) and Tonghua Normal University (THNU). The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to equipping students, professionals, and local communities with the knowledge and skills required to address contemporary global challenges. The Confucius Institute at NUL is designed to serve as a centre of excellence in linguistic and agricultural education, aligning with Lesotho’s national development goals while fostering international cooperation. The Chinese International Education Foundation’s approval on 6 June 2024 further strengthened its foundation, culminating in the awarding of the Confucius Institute insignia to NUL on 27 September 2024.
Strategic Objectives
The Confucius Institute will operate as an academic hub for:
Chinese Language and Culture: Offering structured language programmes from basic to advanced levels, enabling students and professionals to engage effectively with China in trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.
Agricultural Sciences and Technology: Introducing innovative agricultural techniques and sustainable farming practices inspired by China’s agronomy, food security, and agro-processing success.
Research and Knowledge Exchange: Promoting joint research initiatives between Lesotho and China, focusing on sustainable agricultural development, technology transfer, and interdisciplinary learning.
Cultural and Academic Collaboration: Facilitating exchange programmes, international conferences, and cooperative educational projects that bridge cultural and academic divides.
Significance and Impact
In today’s interconnected world, proficiency in Chinese culture and language presents numerous opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals. China’s global influence in trade, technology, and agriculture underscores the importance of acquiring linguistic and cultural fluency to foster international collaboration.
Adopting modern agricultural technologies and sustainable farming methods is essential for Lesotho’s food security, rural development, and economic transformation. The Confucius Institute will serve as a knowledge hub, empowering local farmers and agronomists with practical training, research insights, and exposure to innovative agricultural techniques. It is an academic institution and a symbol of cross-border collaboration, fostering inclusive development and global engagement.
Legal and Institutional Framework
The establishment of the Confucius Institute aligns with sections 24(2)(b), 24(2)(u), and 24(2)(p) of the National University of Lesotho Act, 1992, which empower the Senate and Council to introduce new academic units and programmes. Additionally, Memoranda of Understanding signed with Jilin Agricultural University and Tonghua Normal University in March and April 2023 serve as the foundation for this academic partnership.
Governance and Administration
The Confucius Institute will be governed by a dedicated Management Board consisting of representatives from the National University of Lesotho, Jilin Agricultural University, Tonghua Normal University, and the Chinese International Education Foundation. Dr M. Ntakatsane has been appointed Director (ai) by the NUL. At the same time, Dr F. Meng is the co-director appointed by the Chinese hosts to oversee daily operations and ensure alignment with the Institute’s objectives and strategic vision.
