Dr Mahao Mahao delivers the keynote speech at Machabeng College IB Graduation

Dr. Mahao Mahao, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Language and Social Education, was nominated by Machabeng College to deliver this year’s keynote speech at the recent IB graduation held at ‘Manthabiseng Convention Centre on 18 May 2024.

In his address, Dr. Mahao stressed the need for young people to turn adversity into opportunities and look forward to becoming problem-solvers in their nations. In his words, he echoed that “looking around at your nation and communities probably fills you with fear and anxiety about the future due to factors such as youth unemployment, lack of opportunities for young people, pollution, climate change and global warming. But some of those obstacles could actually be presenting opportunities for you to deepen your thinking about the future.”

He challenged the graduands to emulate Greta Thunberg – the 21 year-old Swedish climate change activist who has received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations for her activism in fighting climate change – and become path-finders in their nations and communities.
