The National University of Lesotho Confucius Institute (NULCI), in partnership with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, commemorated United Nations Chinese Language Day with a vibrant cultural event held on Friday, 17th April, 2026 under the theme “Chinese: Sparking Colorful Dreams.”
The celebration at Netherlands Hall, brought together government officials, diplomats, academics, and members of the Chinese and Basotho communities, highlighting the growing significance of language and cultural exchange in strengthening bilateral relations.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, the Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho, the Directors of Amitofo, as well as members of the Chinese community and NUL management. Their presence underscored the expanding cooperation between Lesotho and China, particularly in the areas of education, agriculture, and cultural development.
United Nations Chinese Language Day is observed globally on April 20, in honour of Cangjie, the legendary figure believed to have invented Chinese characters. NULCI marked the occasion earlier, on April 17, 2026, in line with its academic calendar while maintaining the essence of the international observance.
The event emphasised the importance of multilingualism and cultural diversity, while promoting the equal use of the United Nations’ six official languages. It also served as a platform for fostering dialogue and mutual understanding between Basotho and the Chinese community in Lesotho.
Attendees were treated to a diverse programme of performances showcasing both Chinese and local traditions. Interactive sessions further encouraged cultural exchange and engagement among participants.
The commemoration reinforced the role of language as a vital tool for connection, cooperation, and the strengthening of international partnerships.
