The National University of Lesotho (NUL) community recently came together at the Netherlands Hall, Roma Campus, to honour the life and remarkable legacy of former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Malefetsane Anthony Setšabi, whose leadership helped shape the University’s growth and broaden access to higher education.

Prof. Setšabi served as NUL’s second Vice-Chancellor from 1980 to 1984, providing visionary leadership that strengthened the University’s academic mission and commitment to national development.

Earlier, as Director of the Institute of Extra-Mural Studies (IEMS), he championed the expansion of outreach education through the establishment of IEMS centres in Mahobong, Mohale’s Hoek, and Thaba-Tseka, bringing learning opportunities closer to communities across Lesotho.

He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to academic excellence, educational advancement, servant leadership, deep faith, and dedication to developing future generations. His contributions to NUL and the nation remain a lasting legacy.

Professor Setšabi passed away on 25 July 2026 after a long illness. He was laid to rest on Saturday, 1 August 2026, at his home, Ha Setšabi, Kolonyama, following a funeral service at Little Flower Roman Catholic Church.

The National University of Lesotho extends its heartfelt condolences to the Setšabi family and all who mourn his passing. His life of service will continue to inspire the NUL community and generations to come.
