NUL-UNISA Bilateral Engagement

The NUL Faculty of Science and Technology hosted a delegation from the University of South Africa’s (UNISA) Institute of Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability (iNanoWS) from the 1st to 2nd December, 2022 at the NUL, Roma campus. The aim was to engage in some bilateral discussions on collaboration on projects of mutual benefit.

The first day started off with the presentation by the Acting Director Water Institute where she gave an overview of the Institute including its strategic functions and main thrust areas. This was followed by presentations by Heads of the departments the faculty to give an overview of the different departments and research projects they are currently engaged in. Presentations on UNISA CEST/iNanoWS Research Profile were given by the UNISA delegation led by Prof. Thabo T.I Nkambule – Head & Professor: Institute for Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability.

The day closed off by roundtable discussions on areas of mutual interest aimed at initiating long term collaboration with the University. Hydrological Science, Engineering and Management, and Water/wastewater treatment and technology are amongst the areas identified for collaboration with the Water Institute.

To this end, NUL and UNISA have agreed on a collaborative partnership on various areas of research including the establishment of staff and student exchange programmes. The visit closed off on the second day with a mini-symposium where researchers from both institutions presented their research work. The NUL Faculty of Science and Technology offers excellent opportunities to local and foreign students interested to build a career in any of the disciplines of Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology.

The following five departments constitute the faculty:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry and Chemical Technology
  • Geography and Environmental Science
  • Mathematics and Computer Science
  • Physics and Electronics

The mission of the Faculty is to utilize its share of resources for research, effective quality teaching in the major disciplines of the natural and applied sciences. In pursuit of its mandate the faculty shall take due cognizance of the overarching University Mission to place science and technology as drivers for developmental processes for the nation.
