Staff Faculty: Development Studies

Mrs ‘Majonathane Molapo currently teaches undergraduate courses in the department of Development Studies, specifically Development Economics, Political Economy of International Development, Technology and Development and International Organisations and Institutions. Her research interests include entrepreneurship and community development, good governance and international relations.

Miss Molise is a Lecturer in the Department of Development Studies. Her interests are aligned to the empowerment of women and girls and social justice. Miss Molise is currently teaching courses which are related to development concepts and theories, international Organizations and institutions as well as social movements.

Selomi Makhutla is a lecturer in the Department of Development Studies at the National University of Lesotho. His area of interest is in issues of ecotourism and community empowerment. He teaches Applied Economics for Development; Globalisation and Development, and Selected Topics in Development.

Mr Setšabi is a Senior Lecturer in Development Studies. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the National University of Lesotho and a Master’s degree in Development Studies, specializing in Regional Development Planning with sub-specialisations in rural industrialisation and the Urban Informal Sector. Mr Setšabi also represents the Faculty of Humanities in the University Quality Assurance Committee. His research work has focused on a wide range of areas including the urban informal sector, local government, youth and development, sustainable rural livelihoods, impact of large dams on livelihoods of affected communities. His current research interest area is in conflict and development, the case of the gangs of men in blankets in an international context. He has taught causes in Research Methodology, Spatial Organisation, Regional Development Planning, Sustainable Development, Natural Resources Management, Technology and Development and State and Development. Mr Setšabi has also worked as a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Southern African Studies and Programme Coordinator in Youth and Development at the UNDP.

Dr Macheka is a Lecturer in the Department of Development Studies at the National University of Lesotho. She is also an avid researcher, a consultant, development practitioner, political ecologist and a qualitative research methodology expert. Her research straddles the fields of social research, political ecology, community development and human development. Dr Macheka also focuses on community participation with a bias towards uplifting the marginalised groups such as women and the youth, among others. As a consultant and researcher, she was once engaged by the Nagel Institute for the Study of World Christianity (USA) 2021 as a Co-Investigator for a project: African Spirituality, Health, and Well-being in the face of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Zimbabwe and Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD) 2020 as a Co-consultant for policy relevant research: Interrogating the inclusion and participation of vulnerable groups in Zimbabwe’s local democracy. She was further engaged by British Ecological Society (BES) 2020-2021 as a Principal Investigator for Ecologists in Africa 2020 project: Climate Change and Ecological sustainability in Southern Africa: Interrogating the Role of Higher Education Institutions in Zimbabwe and also by the Swedish Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law as a Principal Investigator for Zimbabwe Human Rights Capacity Development Programme 2019-2021 on ‘Covid-19, gender and human rights’: Women’s access to reproductive health services during the Covid-19 pandemic in Zimbabwe.’ In 2021, she was further engaged as a trainer by Union for the Development of Apostolic Churches in Zimbabwe (UDACIZA) training religious leaders, community leaders and youth on, ‘Strengthening the role of the church in promoting Social Cohesion and Civic Participation within Devolution Processes’. Macheka also works with Local Development Research Advocacy Trust (LODRAT) in Zimbabwe as a Trustee and a Research & Development Consultant. She has experience in research formulation, data collection, analysis and report writing. She is also a qualitative research expert who coordinates research including designing online and offline qualitative data collection tools such as interview guides, focus group discussions guides and questionnaires guides.

Ms. Mokhothu is a lecturer in the Department of Development Studies with particular interest in policy development and empowerment of vulnerable groups especially the youth and the elderly. She teaches a number of courses in Development Studies with particular interest in policy development, implementation and analysis and international relations. Policy courses have exposed her and students to interact with communities to understand community livelihoods challenges and together come-up with solutions. She is currently a second year tutor – where she is supporting students with academic and welfare services when necessary. She supervises undergraduate students.

Dr Mokone Musi is a lecturer in Development studies with an interest in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and rural development focusing on how the corporate world could contribute to development and rural development in particular. He is lecturing in different courses including Development economics, Gender and development, social research methods with keen interest in mixed methods approach. Dr Musi has successfully supervised students both undergraduate and masters’ levels in Development studies and he has published several journal articles on CSR and gender, and CSR and rural development. Dr Musi has experience in research formulation, data collection, analysis and reporting writing using some of the modern technological tools for data collection and mining. As a consultant and researcher, Dr Musi has participated in several consultancies collecting and analysing data including consultancy on the Lesotho National Review for SDG 5 (UNDP) in 2022. He has been a member of research organisations including Lesotho Educational Research Association (LERA) and the South African Development Studies Association (SADSA).

Maxwell Constantine Chando Musingafi is Professor of Public Policy & Governance in the Department of Development Studies at the National University of Lesotho. He has taught courses in HRM; management; gender; conflict & peace; and development studies at Gweru polytechnic and several universities including Zimbabwe Open University, Great Zimbabwe University, University of Eswatini and the National University of Lesotho. He is chairperson of the GBV committee; member of the Conferences Committee; member of the Humanities Journal Resuscitation Committee; Executive Board Member of the Faculty of Humanities; and Senator at the National University of Lesotho. Maxwell is External Examiner (GZU; MSU); Peer Reviewer/Thought Leader (Zimbabwe Council of Higher Education); Consultant-Devolution Implementation (Gvnt of Zim), Editorial Board Member (Uneswa Journal of Education); 2022 Lesotho Voluntary National Reviewer for SDG5 (UNDP); Country Reviewer for Zimbabwe (Global Integrity); and Member (International Society for Development & Sustainability). Professor Musingafi is a novelist and researcher in gender, conflict, peace, governance and water studies with a track record of more than 300 published works.

Professor Rantšo obtained BA Development Studies and Human Geography at the National University of Lesotho, Master of Development Studies at the University of Natal and PhD in Development Studies at the University of the Free State. His PhD focused on the role of the non-agricultural activities in rural development in Lesotho. He has taught courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has also supervised more than twenty postgraduate students. He has also co-supervised a PhD student at the University of Cape Town in the Department of Environmental Sciences. Professor Rantšo has presented academic papers in both local and international conferences. In addition, he has researched and published articles in accredited and peer reviewed journals. He has also published some book chapters. He has been engaged in collaborative research with researchers from countries such as the USA. His research areas include agriculture and rural development, rural non-farm sector, small-scale enterprises (SMMEs), youth unemployment, livelihood diversification, climate change and food security. He has been an external examiner for many universities, externalizing examination scripts, MA dissertations and PhD theses. He has also reviewed articles for more than twenty international journals.

Keneuoe is an Associate Professor in Development Studies. She possesses expertise in Economics for development, Technology and development, Urban development and governance, State and development, Development project management and International political economy. She also has expertise in offering different forms of training including Peace and conflict management, Community development, etc. She is a researcher in the areas of expertise with a track record of published works. Her research interest is mainly in promoting sustainable development. She serves as a member and researcher in a number of international academic associations regionally and internationally.
