FORMER NUL STUDENT BUILDS AN APP THAT FINDS YOU A JOB WHILE YOU SLEEP!

Thabo Maibi, a former student of the National University of Lesotho (NUL), now a PhD student at Stellenbosch University, has built an app called Career Agent. It automatically searches for jobs, matches them to your CV, and even applies for the jobs on your behalf… while you sleep!

Career Agent goes out into the big world of the internet, searching through job websites, company pages, and online platforms. It reads job descriptions one by one, using something called sentiment analysis to figure out if the job is right for you by checking things like location, required skills, and whether you meet the qualifications. If it finds a match and the job advert has an email address, Career Agent automatically sends an email to the employer, attaching your CV and writing a professional message for you, no typing needed, no stress.

Before he became a PhD student, Thabo had one big problem that many young people in Lesotho can relate to: job hunting.

Back then, he’d spend hours sitting behind his laptop, copying and pasting the same information into different online job applications. Some companies would reply, but most of the time? Nothing. No emails. No calls. Just silence.

That’s when Thabo thought, “Wait a minute. Why do people have to suffer like this when we have technology that can help?”

So he decided to build something new. Something smart. Something that can search for jobs automatically and even apply for them, while you sleep.

That’s how he came up with Career Agent, a clever app powered by Artificial Intelligence.

Thabo explains, “Career Agent is like having a personal assistant who never gets tired. It looks at your CV, checks what kind of jobs you’re looking for, and then goes out to find them…for you.”

But how does this actually work?

Well, it starts by looking at your CV, which is basically your story, your skills, your experience, and the things you’re good at. The app uses Natural Language Processing (NLP), which is a technology that helps computers understand human language. With NLP, the system knows what jobs will match your CV and which ones won’t.

Once it understands your skills, Career Agent goes out into the big world of the internet. It searches through job websites, company pages, and online platforms. It reads job descriptions one by one and uses sentiment analysis to figure out if the job is right for you. It checks things like the location of the job, the type of skills needed, and whether you meet the requirements.

If the app finds a job that fits, and the job advert includes an email address, Career Agent gets to work. It automatically sends an email to the employer, attaching your CV and writing a professional message in the email body. You don’t have to lift a finger. The system writes the email for you using context-aware messaging, making sure it sounds polite, relevant, and on point.

If there’s no email address but the job looks interesting, the app still helps. It will send you a message saying, “Hey! We found a job for you, but you’ll need to apply manually.”

That’s not all.

It also has a feature called the ATS Score Checker. Many companies use machines called Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to scan CVs before a human ever sees them. These systems throw away CVs that don’t match enough keywords. Thabo’s app checks your CV against the job description and tells you if it will pass or fail the ATS test. It even gives advice on how to improve your CV by adding missing skills or changing the way you write about your experience.

For people who don’t like typing, Career Agent has something extra special. It lets you build your CV just by speaking. Using speech-to-text technology, you can tell the app about your education, your work history, and your skills. The system listens, writes it all down, and turns it into a beautiful, professional CV using a clean template.

“Most of our people don’t have time to learn complicated job systems,” Thabo says. “I built Career Agent so that even if you’re not a tech expert, you can still apply for jobs, without stress.”
