The two innovators from the National University of Lesotho, Tokelo Makafane and Liau Libetoe, have built a computer system to look after our nature! They used high-up satellites and flying drones to make a special digital map and dashboard. This dashboard works like a super-fast warning alarm, showing exactly where our environment needs help before it gets ruined. It changes the way we take care of our land, making it much easier to protect nature using smart technology.
This amazing project came together thanks to some awesome teachers at the university who helped the students every step of the way. Over in the Faculty of Science and Technology, Mr. Khobatha Setetemela and Mr. Lebajoa Mphatsi helped them build the tech stuff, like the drone maps and the computer dashboard. At the same time, Prof. Marake and Prof. Mapeshoane from the Faculty of Agriculture guided them to make sure the project perfectly fits with protecting our soil, water, and farming lands.
The big problem here is that Lesotho’s high mountain wetlands are getting badly hurt by too many farm animals eating the grass, heavy rains tearing up the dirt, and changing weather. These wet lands are up very high, and they act just like a giant sponge that holds clean water for all of Southern Africa. Usually, people have to walk for hours into the mountains just to check on them, which takes too long, and by then, the land is already broken. This new system stops that problem by catching the damage early so people can rush in and save the water pockets before they disappear completely.
This opens up a massive opportunity for Lesotho to show the world how to save water and nature. Saving these wetlands keeps our most valuable treasure (clean freshwater) flowing safely into our big water projects and local farms. Even better, it creates super fun, green jobs for young people who want to start businesses flying drones, reading maps, and fixing dashboards. It even helps Lesotho earn money from global eco-friendly programs just for keeping our environment healthy and green!
