IEMS Academic Programmes
Mission Statement
The purpose of the Institute of the Institute of Extra Mural Studies (IEMS) is to bring the University to the people and the people to the university by using facilities and resources of the University, for the education of the out-of-school population of Lesotho and for its Economic, social and cultural development. It endeavors to do this in consultation with the appropriate Government Ministries and departments, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Parastatals, academic faculties and private sector institutions.
To this end, the Institute aims at encouraging, assisting and coordinating the efforts of the academic faculties and departments in all forms of University extension.
All programmes are offered on a part-time basis.
Minimum admission requirements for holders of Lesotho General Certificate of Secondary Education (LGCSE), Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (COSC) and General School Certificate (GCE).
Admission requirements for LGCSE holders will be based on the candidate’s achievement on subjects of interest in different programmes.
A. UNDERGRADUATE SUB-DEGREE PROGRAMMES
DIPLOMA IN ADULT EDUCATION (3 YEARS)
Minimum admission requirements:
i) LGCSE with a minimum achievement rating of E (40-49) and above in 4 subjects including English Language;
ii) COSC Third Division or above; with a pass in English Language
iii) GCE with a pass in English Language and any other three subjects;
iv) Equivalent qualifications from institutions recognized by the National University of Lesotho will also be considered;
Prior learning and relevant work experience in formal or non-formal education/community development programmes will be an added advantage.
Career Opportunities:
Practitioners in formal and non-formal adult education, youth and community development programmes; programme managers, administrators or educators/trainers in governmental, non-governmental and community-based projects; Open and Distance Education (ODL) practitioners in formal and non-formal programmes; community mobilization facilitator; community development workers, and researchers. On completion of the Diploma can apply to enrol for a Degree in Adult Education.
DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT (3 YEARS)
Direct Entry
Requirements:
- The minimum requirement is a GCE with pass in Mathematics and English Language. Other equivalent qualifications recognized by the National University of Lesotho will also be considered.
OR
- Candidates who sat for LGCSE should have passed four (4) subjects with Grade E passes in both English Language and Mathematics. The minimum Grades in the other subjects should be E or other equivalent qualifications recognized by the National University of Lesotho will also be considered.
Career Opportunities: Accountant, Human Resources Manager, Researcher, Industrial Relations Manager, Insurance Manager, Marketing Manager.
DIPLOMA IN MASS COMMUNICATION – 3 YEARS
Direct Entry
Requirements:
- A Lesotho General Certificate of Secondary Education (LGCSE) with an achievement rating of D (50-59) or better in 4 subjects including English Language and Sesotho Language or alternative language;
- A Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (LGCSE) with an achievement rating of D (7) or better in 4 subjects including English Language and Sesotho Language or alternative language;
- Anyone with a GCE pass and who at least in the last five (5) years has been working in the field of journalism. This category of candidates shall take and pass an English proficiency test before consideration for admission;
- Other alternative qualifications recognized by the NUL University.
Career Opportunities: Journalist, Photographer, Graphic Designs, Public Relations, Publishing, Information and Communications, Advertising and Marketing.
B. UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES
BACHELOR OF EDUCATION IN ADULT EDUCATION – 4 YEARS
Requirements
- Diploma in Adult Education with a credit pass or
- its equivalent qualification obtained from NUL or any other University recognized by NUL Senate.
- A pass grade in Diploma with at least a WPA of 50% plus 2 years’ work experience in formal or non-formal education after graduation may be considered for admission.
OR
- A relevant degree in any discipline from NUL or any other university recognized by NUL Senate with at least a second class (lower division);
OR
- In exceptional cases, a holder of a pass in degree in any field with a three-year post-graduation work experience may be accepted after they take and pass a prepared entrance examination.
Career Opportunities: Trainer, Facilitator, Projects Monitor and Implementer, Non-formal Educator, Researcher, Human Resource Manager, Change Agent, Community Extension Educator.
BACHELOR OF ARTS IN BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP – 4 YEARS
Direct Entry
Requirements:
The standard entry requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Business and Entrepreneurship degree will be the NUL Diploma in Business Studies/ Management passed with a Pass or better OR equivalent Diplomas recognised by the NUL will also be considered.
Career Opportunities: Researcher, Human Resource Manager, Entrepreneur (self-employed), Accountant, Auditor, Bank Manager, can enrol for further Professional Qualifications or Post-Graduate Studies.
C. MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMMES
MASTER OF EDUCATION IN ADULT EDUCATION – 3 YEARS (PART-TIME)
Areas of Specialization
The programme offers three areas of specialization. However, each specialization is offered only if at least five (5) or more learners register for it. These are:
- Adult Education and Community development
- Open and Distance Learning
- Adult Education and Management of HIV and AIDS programmes.
Admission Requirements: The normal minimum entrance requirements for admission into the programme Master of Education in Adult Education shall be:
- A B.Ed. degree in Adult Education with at least a Second Class – Second Division with an OWM of 65% upwards, or from any other university recognized by NUL Senate.
- A relevant degree in any discipline from this university or any other university recognized by NUL Senate with at least a Second Class – Second Division with an OWM of 65% upwards
- An Honours degree in any relevant discipline from this university or any other university recognized by NUL Senate;
- In exceptional cases, a holder of degree with a pass in any field, a two-year post-graduation work experience relevant to Adult Education may be accepted. However, candidates who fall into this category will be required to take and pass a prepared entrance examination.
Delivery Mode
This is a self-directed distance education programme delivered through Open and Distance Learning (ODL). This means a blend of strategies in order to ensure maximum learner support.
The mode of delivery entails:
- Print-based instruction: essentially course modules, readers and other acquired learning resources.
- Online instruction: Use of digital technologies which include the NUL Learning Management System (THUTO) together with online learning resources such as Open Educational Resources (OERs), audio-visual resources and ICTs in various forms.
- Face-to-face instruction: Five-day (5-day) residential sessions at the beginning of each semester; followed by one (1) weekend seminar per month, and optional independent learning and study groups.

Adult educators, ODL practitioners, community development workers and extension educators, adult education researchers, programme managers and administrators as well as any other personnel working especially in the fields of social sciences and community development.
