EDUCATION ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
The Faculty of Education comprises three departments namely:
- Department of Educational Foundations (EDF)
- Department of Languages and Social Education (LASED)
- Department of Science Education (SCE)
A. UNDERGRADUATE SUB-DEGREE PROGRAMME
DIPLOMA IN AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION
It is offered jointly by the Lesotho Agricultural College (LAC) and the National University of Lesotho (NUL). Students take agriculture content from LAC in the first two years. Then they take Education in the third year in the Faculty of Education.
Requirements for entry at Year 3 level: A pass at the end Year 2 from LAC.
Teachers of agriculture and related subjects in secondary and high schools.
B. UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES
BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (PRIMARY)
Any Primary School Teaching Qualification and any other equivalent qualification as shall be determined by the Senate
The part-time B. Ed. (Primary) is one of the programmes taken to address the primary school teacher’s desire in Lesotho to upgrade themselves both academically and professionally. Primary School Principal, Resource Teacher (DRT), Education Officer (DRT), Primary School Teacher.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION
A Diploma in Education (secondary) holder from Lesotho College of Education (LCE) with at least a second class pass and a major in two science subjects or mathematics and science subjects recognised by the Lesotho school system. The applicant will enter the programme at year two.
Secondary Teachers Certificate (STC) from LCE holder with majors in science and mathematics and at least a second class pass or pass with credit. The applicant will enter the programme at year one.
For entry into the Bachelor of Science degree, students must have:
Sat for a minimum of six (6) subjects in LGCSE examinations.
Obtained a B grade or better in Mathematics.
Obtained a C grade or better in Biology or Physical Science.
Obtained a D grade or better in English Language.
Obtained a C grade or better in one other subject.
Obtained a D or better in any other two subjects.
Teachers of science and mathematics subjects in secondary and high schools, Curriculum developers, Subject specialists, Inspectors of schools, Teachers/Educators/Lecturers in Institutions of Higher Learning, science and mathematics subject Advisors, In-service Educators for mathematics and science teachers and Environmental Managers.
BACHELOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
To be admitted into year 1, the following shall apply:
Applicants should have sat for a minimum of six (6) subjects in LGCSE examinations
OR
Of the six (6) subjects, four (4) should be passed with a C grade or better inclusive of English Language. The other two (2) subjects must be passed with at least a D grade.
The entrance requirements for selected specializations shall be:
1. Business Education
Applicants intending to take subjects in Business Education must have a C grade or better in Mathematics.
2. English Language Education
Applicants intending to take English Language as a teaching subject must have a B grade or better in English Language.
Teaching two non-science subjects at secondary and high school levels, Subject specialist at the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), Subject specialist at the Inspectorate, Head of Department in a Secondary or High School, Deputy Principal in a Secondary or High School, Principal in a Secondary or High School, Teaching Assistant/Assistant Lecturer at National University of Lesotho, Special needs educator, psycho-social carer, educational psychologist, educational counsellor, Run a full-time school, Run support afternoon/weekend lessons for pupils who attend various schools and Run supplement support lessons/classes for supplementary or part-time JC and LGCSE.
BACHELOR OF EDUCATION
The normal requirements for applicants with a teaching qualification from Lesotho College of Education (LCE) shall be:
STC with at least a second class pass and two teaching subjects recognized by the school system. OR
Diploma in Education (Secondary) with a least a second class pass and two teaching subjects recognized by the school system.
To be admitted into Year 1, the following shall apply:

C. POSTGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES
MASTER OF EDUCATION (M.ED)
B.Ed. Honours with 2nd Class pass or better in a specialization applied for, or equivalent qualification from other institutions recognized by Senate as comparable by academic status.

BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (HONOURS)
A candidate applying to study in this programme should have:
First Class (1st Class); Second Class first division (2[i]); or Second Class Second division (2[ii]) in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed); Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A.Ed.) or Bachelor of Science Education (BSc.Ed.) or equivalent.
Pass in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed); Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A.Ed.) or Bachelor of Science Education (BSc.Ed.) or equivalent plus two years working experience in the field of education or minimum qualification of undergraduate bachelor’s degree in education in one of the following categories:
First Class (1st Class) Second Class First Division (2[i]) or Second Class Second Division (2[ii]) in Bachelor of Education (Primary) (B.ED. Primary). This cohort can only be admitted into the programmes (Primary and Early Childhood) under Area D (Foundation Studies).

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (PGDE)
This programme is for candidates who aspire to have a teaching qualification. The candidates applying for this programme should hold any Bachelor’s degree with two majors recognised as teaching subjects in Lesotho schools, or single majors in BSc. Agriculture or BA Pastoral Care and Counselling for those aspiring to teach Agriculture or Religious Education.
The normal requirements for (PGDE) programme are a relevant undergraduate degree from a recognized university provided that the undergraduate degree programme included a substantial component of studies recognized by the Faculty of Education as teaching subjects.
D. MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMMES
MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION
The applicant should have one of the following:
1st Class; Second Class; First Division (2[i]); or (2[ii]) pass in Bachelor of Science Education (BSc.Ed); or Bachelor of Science Education in Agriculture (BSc.Ed–Agric)
1st Class; Second Class; First Division (2[i]); or (2[ii]) pass in Bachelor of Science ((BSc.); or Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSc. Agric.) plus a Pass with Credit in Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSc. Agric.) plus a Pass with Credit in Dip. Agric. Ed.;
or Any other equivalent qualification approved by NUL Senate

MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION (MA.ED)
Second Class Second division (2[ii] in B.Ed., B.A.Ed. or B.A. + PGDE, or equivalent, OR qualifications from other universities recognized by Senate as comparable by academic status shall be the minimum pass requirement. Where spaces are limited, admission will be based purely on merit.

Applicants are advised to inquire from the Department of Language and Social Education (LASED) regarding the availability of supervisory services as personnel shortages may affect the capacity to provide full supervisory services in certain areas.
E. DOCTORATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATION
Doctor of Philosophy in Education (PhD) is offered in the following fields of Education: Educational Foundations (see specializations under Master of Education (M.ED), Language and Social Education (see specializations under Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.), and Science Education (see specializations under Master of Science Education (MSC.ED).
The normal entry qualification for a PhD is normally a minimum Pass of 65% or equivalent in the relevant field (M.ED, M.A.ED, and MSC.ED) or as approved by the Senate.
